My husband and I recently purchased this stunning 1887 Queen Anne brick Victorian in Southern Illinois. We are loving continuing the restoration project started by previous owners and diligently researching the original family. We are documenting such research on our blog, thebrickandmaple.com and on Instagram @thebrickandmaple. The original patriarch, Peter Martin Romeiser, was a well-to-do merchant in Belleville, IL. He opened the Romeiser Company in the 1870s that would go on to occupy an entire city block. He and his wife, Elise, raised their 8 children in this home. Only half would survive into adulthood. Their eldest daught Emma Romeiser Pannes perished on the Hindenburg when it caught fire in 1937. Peter and his wife both died in 1916 and eventually the Romeiser home was sold in 1919. After changing hands many times and eventually going into foreclosure in 2012, we purchased August 2018.
