    Representative from Clarke county, was born September 16, 1848, in Monongalia county, Virginia. Was brought up on a farm, attended subscription school 140 days. Entered the State University and received the degree of A.B. in 1873 and A.M. in 1878. Married Julia M. Protzman, September 30, 1873, came to Osceola, Iowa, October 3, 1873. Member of A.F. & A.M., K. of P., Shrine, and Elks. Republican in politics. Was presidential elector in 1892, member of the house in the twenty-sixth, twenty-eighth, thirtieth and thirty-first general assemblies. United States attorney for So. District of Iowa, from March 14, 1907, to March 16, 1914. Elected county attorney in 1914, re-elected in 1916 and elected to the thirty-eighth general assembly in 1918.
